Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Friends – Warm Greetings to Everyone!
I welcome you all to the speech ceremony of today and it gives me immense pleasure to stand here today in front of you all and address this event. As you all know that we have come together on the eve of Ambedkar’s Jayanti to pay homage to Shri Ambedkar Ji. This is a very important day for every Indian as this day marks his birth. His complete name is Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and was born on 14th April 1891 in the town of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, India. His father was Ramji Maloji Sakpal and mother was Bhimabai. He was popularly called as ‘Babasaheb’.
When he was five years old, he lost his mother. Talking about his education, he did his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Mumbai and went to America in order to pursue his higher studies. When he enrolled himself in the Columbia University and qualified in Masters and Ph.D, he finished his degree in England and returned to India in the year 1923.
In India, he began his law in the high court of Bombay and started his social work and spread the importance of Education. He helped the people to fight for their rights and stand up to eradicate caste system. He even wrote a book on the “Annihilation of Caste” wherein he discussed about the serious concern that plagued India, i.e. discrimination on the basis of caste, class, race and gender. It is due to his active participation in the social work that people began addressing him as ‘Babasaheb’.
He is also popularly known as the father of our Indian Constitution as he played the important role of framing the constitution of India. During that time the most crucial issue in the Indian Constitution was the reservation system, the chief aim of which was the upliftment of the weaker section of society and improvement of their lifestyle as well as to bring them to the fore.
It is owing to his active social work and overwhelming contribution towards the upliftment of the underprivileged that Bhimrao Ambedkar is still remembered by all today and greatly revered in India. In fact, 14th April is celebrated as a yearly festival in order to commemorate his memory. Since 2015, this day is observed as a public holiday across India and Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated not only in our country, but in other parts of the world too.
On this day, the processions are carried out by his followers at Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur as well as Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. It is customary for our esteemed public figures like the President, Prime Minister as well as leaders of the principal political parties to pay reverence to the statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar at the Indian Parliament in New Delhi. Warm Greetings Everyone! You all are welcome to the commemoration ceremony of Bhimrao Ambedkar.
I am extremely overwhelmed to see the congregation of large number of people today on Ambedkar Jayanti. Bhimrao Ambedkar as we all know is popularly known as the Father of our Indian Constitution. Born on 14th April 1891 at MHOW (Military Headquarter of War) in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Bhimrao Ambedkar dedicated his whole life for the upliftment of untouchables. So a great personality that he was; let us know more about his life and achievements before we proceed to pay him homage.
Having studied law in United States, he came back to India as a masterly scholar and could apply his visionary skills in the making of his country. He has also published various journals in order to raise awareness about the political and civil rights as well as social freedom for the untouchables in India. He dedicatedly fought against the sins of untouchability as well as the caste system. The entire nation remembers him for his groundbreaking work and for initiating Dalit Buddhist movement. Other than being the architect of Indian Constitution, he also occupied the position of the Indian Law Minister.
In the year 1990 he was honored with Bharat Ratna Award – the highest civilian award in India given to a person for his exemplary achievements. His birthday, i.e. is 14th April, is observed across the country as Shri Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti and public holiday is declared on this day. Even a memorial is built in his memory in his Delhi house at 26 Alipur Road.
On this day, huge processions are carried out by various Dalit organizations in the fond remembrance of this great soul. In fact, various government as well as non-government organizations on this day organize different activities, such as rally and cultural programs. Dalit melas are organized in different parts of the country. Meetings, prayers and memorial speeches are also observed in different state capitals. Interestingly, hundreds and thousands of bookshops are put up to sell books. The message he gave out to his supporters was “educate, organize and agitate”.
So let us come together and make this Jayanti too even more special with our prayers and offerings. Being tagged as the great Indian political leader, historian, jurist, philosopher, anthropologist, economist, orator, editor, teacher, revolutionary, prolific writer and the Buddhist revivalist – it is not possible to sum up in words his glaring achievements. Our words of appreciation will always fall short of his accomplishments.
The only way to give him our heartfelt respect and admiration is by following his path and adopting his principles. He envisaged India which is over and above caste, class and gender prejudice and where people irrespective of their color, race and religion could live freely and get equal opportunities to prove their mettle in every walk of life. So let’s also take pledge to adhere to the same principle and make our country a better place for all. This is all I have to say.

I heartily welcome everyone to today’s event organized in the honor of Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar. As you know all know that today is 14th April, i.e. Jayanti of Bhimrao Ambedkar – the man who gave his entire life towards national and social cause. So before we mark this great day and proceed with our ceremonial rituals, I would like to deliver a brief speech on Ambedkar Jayanti and cite the relevance of this day.
Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is considered no less than a festival in itself, which is celebrated on April 14th every year in the loving memory of Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar. He was born in the year 1891 and it is since 2015 that the day is marked as a government holiday across the country. Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti is observed not only in India, but at some places outside India too.
The procession is carried out by the followers of Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar at such places as Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur and Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. On this day, it is expected of the prominent Indian personalities, such as the Prime Minister, President as well as other chief leaders of the known political parties to give their reverence to the statue built of Shri Ambedkar at the Indian Parliament in New Delhi. It is observed all across the world, chiefly by Dalits who began following Buddhism after drawing inspiration from him. On this day, you’d find a lot of fanfare around the local statues of Ambedkar.
Nicknamed as Baba Saheb, he pro-actively worked for the upliftment of untouchables and organized various campaigns to combat social discrimination based on caste, class and gender. It is because of his great contribution towards the social cause that he occupies a special place in the hearts of the Indian people, especially the unprivileged communities. He in fact organized a massive force in the form of Dalit Buddhist Movement in our country. It is primarily for this reason that he is looked up as an icon of Dalit. Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar had once said, “I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved” – the quote is found in The Ultimate Book of Quotations. In the year 1990, Baba Saheb was posthumously bestowed the highest civilian award of India, i.e. Bharat Ratna.
He was of a man of great stature as he nurtured a vision for India’s future and there was no one during his time who could match up to his knowledge and ideas concerning:
- Building of Indian Constitution;
- The agricultural and industrial progress of India;
- The establishment of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the year 1934.
So let’s come together on this momentous day and recall all his fine doings, which we rarely observe in the present-day Indian politicians. I wish if we could have more and more such endearing and loyal people in our Indian government, then India would not have witnessed a steep decline in the ethos and working of political maneuvering. Dear Friends – I warmly welcome you all to the Ambedkar Jayanti Celebration.
I hope this day finds you in the best of spirit. Before we begin with the ceremonial rituals on this special day, let me first extend warm thank you to everyone present here for making this event happen and contributing in the best way possible. Just like every year, we have come together to observe this day and recall the great personality, i.e. Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar, who left a deep imprint on the minds of Indian people. In fact, quite a considerable extent, he influenced and moved the world according to his opinion. He strongly raised his voice against the prevalent caste system. He advocated fraternity and equality in every section of the society and fostered an all-inclusive as well as steady progress of the nation.
The reason why he is still remembered today and his day of birth is considered auspicious is because he empowered the world with his ennobling thoughts. He put his utmost efforts towards the eradication of caste and gender biases which led to the degeneration of our society and made it regressive. Having earned the epithet of “Baba Saheb”, Shri Bhimrao Ambedkar championed the cause of untouchability and initiated the Untouchable Movement in our country. Being a great philosopher, politician, jurist, anthropologist and social reformer, Ambedkar was a multi-faceted personality and encouraged the all-round development of our nation.
So how can we as Indians allow his birth date to get lost in obscurity? And, it is since 2015 that the day, i.e. 14th of April has been marked as the government holiday across India. It goes without saying that this day is celebrated with great zeal and mass celebrations are organized everywhere in the country with a view to pay homage and reverence to B.R. Ambedkar for his huge contribution in giving shape to the Constitution of India. A special event is organized every year in his honor at the Indian Parliament. On this day, eminent personalities honor his statue. The celebrations consist of such activities as cultural dance performances, debate competitions, painting, essay writing and sports competitions, to name a few.
And, in order to spread more and more awareness of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar globally, several embassies in India across the planet organize special speech giving ceremonies, along with some special events highlighting the importance of this day. Following are the tributes paid in his honor:
- On the 124th birthday of Shri Ambedkar, a Google Doodle was published.
- In the year 2017, on the day of Ambedkar Jayanti and in the fond memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the emoji of Dr. Ambedkar was launched by Twitter.
- As per the government of Maharashtra, April 14th is to be remembered as the Knowledge Day in the loving memory of Shri Ambedkar.
