Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated across the country at 14th of September every year to remember the historic occasion of the Hindi. It was started celebrating as a Hindi Diwas as Hindi written in Devnagari script was approved as an official language by the Constituent Assembly at 14th of September in the year 1949.

Hindi Diwas 2019

Hindi Diwas 2019 will be celebrated all over the India at Saturday, on 14th of September.

India observes Hindi Diwas annually on 14th September, to promote Hindi language and to save it from getting extinct.

The Government of India, under the Ministry of Home Affairs has organized a Hindi Diwas Samaroh on 14th September 2019 at 10 A.M. Live streaming of the complete event was done on Government Video Portal at webcast.gov.in.

Many competitions pertaining to Hindi language were held in schools and colleges. Children participated in several Hindi competitions like essay writing, quiz, poetry etc.

In the western state of Rajasthan, 200 authors were honoured by the Rajasthan Hindi Granth Academy, on Hindi Diwas. The function was held at Birla auditorium in Jaipur.

A two days International Hindi Conference was organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) at NDMC Hall, New Delhi. The conference was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Goa Mrs. Mridula Sinha.

Many politicians and notable public figures have supported the campaign by writing their social media account names in Hindi.

Hindi Diwas Week

The Hindi Diwas Week or ‘Hindi Saptah’ is mainly celebrated around the Hindi Diwas. It starts with the Hindi Diwas on 14th September and celebrated for one week till 20th September. It is mostly celebrated in government offices, schools, colleges and many private organizations. Many nationalized and private banks including corporate sectors in south India celebrate Hindi Diwas Week by writing a specific Hindi word on a white board and describing the meaning and uses of the word.

Every hour there is a new word written on the white board so that people learn new Hindi words and use then in their daily life. In many schools and colleges Hindi essay writing and speech competitions are organized and students speak only in Hindi without using any English words. Many functions are organized on a national level showcasing the importance of Hindi and how it was used as a language of national integration during the independence struggle.

Why Hindi Diwas is Celebrated (History)

Hindi Diwas is celebrated all through the India to show the importance of Hindi language in the country. The Hindi language in India has a big history which belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. After being an independent country, the Government of India made a goal to standardize the mother tongue means the Hindi language with the grammar and orthography.

Devanagari script is used to bring uniformity in writing. It is spoken in many countries of the world including Mauritius, Pakistan, Surinam, Trinidad and some other countries. It is the language spoken as a mother tongue by around 258 million people and known as the 4th largest language of the world.

It is celebrated as an event every year on 14th of September, because the Hindi language (written in Devanagari script) was first adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India as the official language of the Republic of India on 14th of September in 1949. The decision of using Hindi language as an official language of India was legalized by the Constitution of India (which came into effect on 26th of January in 1950).

According to the Constitution of India, Hindi language written in Devanagari script was first adopted as the official language of India under the Article 343.

 

Activities on Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated in the schools, colleges, offices, organizations and other enterprises as a Hindi Diwas with the unique programs and competitions organized related to Hindi poems, story recitations, vocabulary quizzes and etc. Hindi is the better mode of communication among the people in India so it should be promoted among each other. Hindi is known as the 2nd most commonly spoken language of the world.

Awards are distributed at this day by the President of India to the people for the superiority in different fields related to the Hindi at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Rajbhasha awards are given to the Departments, Ministries, PSUs and Nationalized Banks. The name of two of the awards which are distributed annually on the Hindi Diwas has been renamed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in its order on 25th of March in 2015.

Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar (which was instituted in 1986) has been changed to the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar, and Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar has been changed to the Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar.

Hindi Diwas Celebration

Hindi Diwas is celebrated annually to pay tribute to the mother language of India. It is celebrated by the people in government offices, private offices, and educational institutions. It is celebrated by the school and college students with the variety of activities under the proper guidance of teachers. Hindi diwas celebration takes place all over the country which marks the importance of most widely spoken Hindi language.

It is celebrated by the students in almost all the schools and colleges by organizing a special assembly with lots of recreational activities. Some of the highlighting activities at this day are speech recitation, essay writing, Hindi poem recitation, recitation of Kabir Das ke Dohey, Rahim ke Dohey, Thulsi Das ke Dohey, songs singing, dance, general knowledge quiz competition in Hindi, drama play, slogan writing, etc by the students of various classes.

At this day, students are motivated to give speech, write essay or perform other activities especially in Hindi language. Small kids in the schools are also given some tasks to write or speech few lines in Hindi. A very old and famous Hindi Hymn (“Ai Malik Tere Bande Hum”) is sing by the students in group.

Inter school competitions are organized by the various school in order to celebrate the National Language Day – Hindi Diwas. Students from various schools are invited to take part in the variety of contests such as Hindi poem recitation (based on theme of “Hindi Meri Pehchan”) and play competition (based on theme of “Ekta ka Sutra Hindi), etc. Such type of contests organized by the schools help students to explore their Hindi language knowledge with different hues and flavors.

 

Importance of Hindi Language and Need to Celebrate Hindi Diwas as an Event

Hindi is our mother language and we should respect and give honor to it. Together with the economic prosperity and technological development in the country, the Hindi language is losing its importance a little while. Everyone wants to learn and speak English language in order to get success in almost all the fields as there are demand of the same. However, we should not leave our mother language and take interest in it to have thorough knowledge together with other necessities of being success. Language and culture of any country plays an important role in making people-to-people contact between any countries.

The wings of mother language of any economic rich country grow faster as people of other countries want to learn that language however never think that their real identity depends on their own country’s mother language and culture. Every Indian should give value to the Hindi language and credit for the economic advancement in the country.

It reveals the history of India from very ancient time and is the key for our identity in future. It is a very vast language spoken and well understood by the people of other countries too (like Nepal, Trinidad, Mauritius, etc). It provides very easy and simple means to interact with each other. It plays a key role in uniting the diverse India, so called as the link language.

There is an enormous need to celebrate Hindi Diwas as an event every year in order to pay honor and pass its significance to the next generation. Hindi diwas should be celebrated, not only because it is our national language but also that it is our mother tongue which we must respect and commemorate time to time. We should be proud of our national language and never feel hesitation while speaking Hindi in other countries.

Now-a-days, English language is preferred more by the people rather than Hindi because of increasing demand of English language in almost all the work areas. In such condition, the annual celebration of Hindi Diwas makes Indian people feel proud that there is a day committed to their national language.

It is a wholeheartedly event gives opportunity to Indian people to promote the Hindi language. The celebration will initiate the enthusiasm among youths of the country about the Hindi language. It motivates and brings positive perceptions about Hindi among youths. So, we should celebrate Hindi Diwas with great enthusiasm every year by participating in the variety of programs organized in the school, college, community or society in order to heartily feel the importance of Hindi language.

Rewards and Recognition for Hindi Language

Many awards are given to the people for their outstanding contribution to the Hindi language. It is a way to encourage people towards Hindi language and promoting Hindi as the official language of India.

The Rajbhasha Gaurav award is given to the Hindi writers who write on science and technology topics. The award is presented by our Honorable President and it comprises of a memento and prize money which ranges from 10 thousand to 2 lakhs. There are 13 awards given under this category.

Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar is the award given to departments, committee, trusts, nationalized banks, magazines and boards for promoting Hindi as the official language. There are 39 awards given under this category and this also is presented by our Honorable President. The Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar for 2016-17 was presented to Vijaya Bank for implementing Hindi in daily bank activities.

Aims of Hindi Diwas Celebration

The main aim of celebrating Hindi Diwas is to encourage the use of Hindi language as the official language of India and a language of common man. As India is a diverse country with various cultures and traditions Hindi Diwas is a day which integrates the country under the blanket of our national language. Hindi Diwas also commemorates how Hindi language played a vital role for national integration during the Indian independence struggle.

In the modern times when we can see that English is becoming the most popular language in our country, celebrating Hindi Diwas becomes more important to spread the awareness of the simplicity and the richness of this language. Hindi has been derived from Sanskrit and by celebrating Hindi Diwas we are not giving respect to Hindi but we are also giving tribute to Sanskrit, the language of our Vedas and Shashtras. Hindi Diwas celebration is an aim to develop this language so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the cultures of our country.
